Just another day

Last night, my friend and I were walking towards the sector 14 market to have dinner when a small boy approached us requesting us to give him money to buy some pencils so that he could study. My friend grew curious and asked about his whereabouts and where he lived, he replied that he lived somewhere in a slum behind the godown area of Gurgaon.

As I looked at the boy in the street light, I noticed the dishevelled hair, dirty torn clothes but there was a strange sparkle in that boy’s eyes who seemed to be 10 or 11 years old. We offered to buy him all the pencils, notebooks as well as the books that he needed. At this the boy replied that since it was getting dark, he was in a hurry to get back home and asked us to give him money to buy pencils , but we weren’t going to pay any heed to pleas for money. We told him to tag along with us till the market where we would buy him the stationery stuff and he could leave for his place after that, the boy took two steps forward, then stopped and ran away; retreating into the darkness of the night.

I guess it was just another day in the life of that boy.
